Research proposal defense and oral examination

Time Standards for Comprehensive Examinations and Research Proposal

Committee Meeting and Thesis Title Six Months before the Proposal Defense

•Committee meeting at least 6 months in advance of the expected proposal defense should specify the expected length of the proposal and topic; a title for the proposed research should be submitted to the department for posting on the department's web site. (The title may be changed at any time; the department administrator should be notified of changes)

IRB Proposal Two Months before Fieldwork

•Students should be aware of the time that it takes to go the the HSR/IRB process and plan accordingly. Proposals should be submitted to the IRB at least 2 months in advance of the proposed start of fieldwork.

Final Draft Proposal to Committee Three Weeks before Proposal Defense

The final proposal should be submitted to the committee for approval three weeks in advance of the planned proposal defense

Final Approved Proposal to Department Office One Week before Defense

A copy of the approved research proposal should be submitted to the department office one week before the proposal defense.

Web-Publishable Abstract

At the same time an abstract to be posted on the department's web site should be submitted.

Defense Notification

Notification of the defense should be made through e-mail, by postings in the department area and a posting on the department's web site.

Presentations

Proposal presentations should be approximately one half hour in length.

Oral Examination

•The committee will prepare some oral examination questions in advance

The student should be prepared for an hour-long oral examination on questions relating to the general context of his or her research.

 

Scheduling

No proposal defenses may be scheduled during the last two weeks of the semester. The student should see the department administrative assistant for available time slots for the defense.
