Time Standards for Comprehensive Examinations and Research Proposal
Committee meeting at least 6 months in advance of the expected proposal defense should specify the expected length of the proposal and topic; a title for the proposed research should be submitted to the department for posting on the department's web site. (The title may be changed at any time; the department administrator should be notified of changes)
Students should be aware of the time that it takes to go the the HSR/IRB process and plan accordingly. Proposals should be submitted to the IRB at least 2 months in advance of the proposed start of fieldwork.
The final proposal should be submitted to the committee for approval three weeks in advance of the planned proposal defense
A copy of the approved research proposal should be submitted to the department office one week before the proposal defense.
At the same time an abstract to be posted on the department's web site should be submitted.
Notification of the defense should be made through e-mail, by postings in the department area and a posting on the department's web site.
Proposal presentations should be approximately one half hour in length.
The committee will prepare some oral examination questions in advance
The student should be prepared for an hour-long oral examination on questions relating to the general context of his or her research.
No proposal defenses may be scheduled during the last two weeks of the semester. The student should see the department administrative assistant for available time slots for the defense.
